Continuing with my teaching rhetoric in the classroom series, I wanted to share two resources that are helpful for teaching rhetoric.
I was first introduced to The Essential Guide to Rhetoric as an undergraduate. My “Black Women Writers” course at SUNY Albany, which was heavily influenced by rhetoric, required this text. This text, and this course, were my first real exposure to rhetoric. Keith and Lundberg write clearly and concisely, making what can be a difficult topic approachable for anyone and everyone. Although I read this as an undergraduate, I believe this book (with scaffolding) would be accessible for high school students as well.
If your department isn’t able to purchase this book, I recommend reading smaller sections with your students. The section on Lloyd Bitzer’s “Rhetorical Situation” is particularly helpful, and would be a fantastic addition to any unit on rhetoric. Due to the time constraints of my rhetoric unit this year, I was unable to use this book with my students; however, it greatly affected my teaching of rhetoric: it is the source of my definitions, and it is also the basis of my own understanding of rhetoric. I cannot recommend this book enough as both a teacher and student resource!
A Guide to Composition Pedagogies was required reading for my Contemporary Approached to Teaching Composition course at SSU. This book has chapters on the many different kinds of composition pedagogies, but the one most relevant to teaching rhetoric is David Fleming’s section, “Rhetoric and Argumentation.” This section focuses on rhetoric as a pedagogy and provides teachers with effective ways to implement a rhetorical approach to teaching writing. Although this book would not be useful for students directly, its strategies for teachers are sure to benefit students’ learning indirectly!
